LRI was found in order to carry out the Lunar Prospector mission which used a Gamma Ray Spectrometer, a Neutron Spectrometer, an Alpha Particle Spectrometer, a Magnetometer, an Electron Reflectometer, and a Doppler Gravity Experiment to gather a wealth of data about the composition of the lunar surface, polar ice deposits, the Moon's magnetic fields, the lunar dipole moment, the size of the lunar core and the lunar gravity field. The science data from the Lunar Prospector mission can be accessed by visiting the Planetary Data System.
