Lunar Prospector: Against All Odds by Dr. Alan Binder is the complete story of the Lunar Prospector spacecraft, from conception through mission. This is not a technical book and was written for the public at large.
Lunar Prospector: Against All Odds is Dr. Binder’s highly personal account of the tribulations, dirty politics and triumphs that he endured and enjoyed during the 13 years that it took for Lunar Prospector to come to fruition.
Dr. Binder wrote Lunar Prospector: Against All Odds to:
1. Provide a complete and detailed account of a spacecraft mission.
2. Expose to the America public and taxpayer the incompetence and self-serving activities of the entrenched NASA bureaucracy and big aerospace companies, which together waste a large fraction of the more than $13 billion a year that NASA receives from the federal government.
3. Show to the American public that when missions are properly conceived and managed by a competent person as a commercial venture, the cost of space exploration can be cut by a factor of 10, as Dr. Binder proved with Lunar Prospector.
4. Demonstrate to the commercial community that space exploration, as a private venture is feasible and profitable.
The book has nearly 1,100 pages of text, and includes 74 photographs and 27 appendices. The table of contents and preface can be read here.
(pdf 187kb)
Color versions of the photos, illustrations and appendices can be viewed in the Lunar Prospector
Photo Gallery.
Dr. Binder hopes that the readers will find his book entertaining as well as informative and provide an insider’s view of the American Space Program and the problems that plague it.
